Corgi United States

P51D Mustang of 363rd Fighter Group, Charles "Chuck" Yeager
Aviation Archive. Flying Aces. This is Corgi's original version of the P-51D, copyrighted in 2000. Of all the first generation Corgi molds, this one had to be the worst. Many a time I've pondered the shapes of these models (I own a copy of each one, I think) trying to figure out why they look so odd. With the release of the new mold, the reason for the oddness is obvious: the cowling was bulky, bulgy, and lacked a smoothly curved atop. The bulkiness and bulginess was due to the poorly designed mold; the lack of cowling smoothness was poor machining during fitting and assembly.
