Messerschmitt
Bf 109 V-14, Zurich International Flying Meet, Switzerland, July 1937,
Generalmajor Ernst UDET, (WW1 / 62 Victories) |
This
is a very well proportioned model, having just the right taper to
the nose and dihedral to the wings. With the 109E these shapes are
extremely important (see what Dragon
did to their 1/72 109E).
The color, of course, is spectacular as befits its racing purpose.
The story behind this particular plane is also spectacular, and well
worth a look-up.
Notice that the nose area (and the landing gear covers) needed special
modeling treatment. The carburetor intake is flatter and longer than
in the production model (which followed soon after the V-14 aircraft),
and the exhaust stacks are mere stubs. The swastikas on the tail are
decals and had to be applied. In a special touch, each of the main
gear is fastened to the wing with two pegs and a magnet!
There were three manufacturing errors: One side of the canopy was
not glued down, so I had to do it; a part of the paper rapping was
stuck to the starboard landing strut, maring it; the prop would barely
turn (thus, no pictures of a spinning prop). |
